Recording and editing audio

You can record audio directly into the AD Editor and the recording will automatically be time-coded to the script, and will be saved immediately.

Audio recording

Record audio in the following way:

  1. Open the audio panel by clicking on the 'Audio' button above the Event script panel.
  2. Click on the red recording button. A recording will start from the beginning of the event. If you want the recording to start at another time during the event then navigate to that time and hold down the Alt (Windows or Linux) or Option (Mac) key whilst clicking on the red recording button.
  3. A countdown of 3 seconds will automatically take place ahead of the recording. Should you want a different countdown (or none at all) then you can click on the three-dot menu, select Recording countdown and set your preferred countdown.

Additionally, you can manage your recording settings under Appearance & Behaviour in the General Settings. menu. From there you can manage:

Continuous recording

  • Continuous recording can be toggled 'on' or 'off'.
  • Enabling auto stop will make your recordings stop automatically at the end-time of all events.
  • Enabling auto skip will ensure you automatically skip to the next event during continuous recording, rather than let the video play through the time between events.
  • Enforcing minimum countdown will ensure that you always have your personalised minimum countdown in place even if the next recording follows on immmediately from the previous one.

Tips:

  • Make sure you have given access to your microphone in Google Chrome. You can do this by selecting the picture of the microphone next to the web URL and using the slidebar to give access.
  • Make sure you have your preferred microphone selected.
  • Make sure you have your preferred settings in place for video volume control.
  • You can mute the video during recording for any specific event by clicking on the volume control button next to the video waveform.
  • A longer countdown allows you to get a feel for the tone of the scene you’re describing so you can adjust your narration to match.
  • Ensure your recording doesn't exceed the video length.

Delete recorded audio

Recorded audio can be deleted by right-clicking on the recording and clicking on 'Delete'.

Split recorded audio

To split an audio recording, right-click on the time-code of the recording where you'd like to split, then click on 'Split'.

Alternatively, position the video on the time-code you'd like to split at and then use the Split recording hotkey.

Once an audio recording has been split the separate parts of the recording can be edited or deleted independently of each other.

Move recording

An audio recording can be moved by dragging and dropping it into your preferred position on the timeline. Hover over the bottom part of the waveform of the audio, then drag and drop.

You can also swap the position of a recording by first right-clicking on it and then clicking on 'Swap left' or 'Swap right'.

Delete part of recording

You can delete part of a recording as such:

  1. Position your mouse on the top part of the waveform of the audio.
  2. Select the part you want to delete by clicking and dragging your mouse across a section of the recording.
  3. Use your backspace key to delete the selected part.

Re-record part of recording

You can re-record part of a recording as such:

  1. Delete the part you want to re-record.
  2. Position the video at the time-code you'd like the new recording to start at.
  3. Press down the Alt (Windows or Linux) or Option (Mac) key, then click on the record button.

Cropping a recording

To crop a recording:

  1. Hover along the bottom of the recorded audio at the end you wish to crop (either start or end of file).
  2. Hold down and drag the section inwards to crop.

Fade in

This feature allows you to add a softened start/end to your recorded section.

  1. Hover over the top corner (left or right) of your recording and an arrow will appear.
  2. Hold down on the arrow and pull the corner to the designated new fade position.
  3. You can drag wider to add a longer fade in or out.
  4. Release the arrow to place the fade position into the section.

Tip: To edit or delete a fade, simply create a new one on top of the existing one. If you want to remove the fade entirely then drag it all the way out of the recording.

Timeline zoom

You can zoom in and out of the timeline by using the plus and minus buttons on the top of the AD event to be more specific with timimngs.
