General editor settings

Settings cog

The settings cog of the Subtitle Editor can be found in the top-left corner of the screen, and can be toggled open and closed by clicking on the cog icon.

Within the menu there are six different categories of settings:

  1. Preferences
  2. Appearance & Behaviour
  3. Track specification
  4. Hotkeys
  5. Sound
  6. Video

Preferences

Should you wish to share your editor settings such as your hotkeys and appearance preferences, you can click on 'Export'.

You will then be able to share the exported preference file with someone else and they can 'Import' it in order to implement the same preferences as yours.

You can click on the 'Restore default' button to restore the Zille default settings.

Appearance & Behaviour

In 'Appearance & Behaviour' you can manage the following settings:

Text editor

  • Label language: You can choose to show which language a subtitle event should be written in. This is most useful when working on dual subtitles, where there are two different languages represented in each subtitle event.

Timeline

You can use the 'Tick boxes' provided to show or hide the following features on the timeline:

  • Event text: this will show the contents of each event
  • Scene markers: this will show the frames where there is a scene change
  • Video waveform: this will show the audio waveform of the video
  • Video subtitles: this will show the subtitles of the video

Track specification

In 'Track specification' you will find an overview of the following:

  • Event duration (minimum and maximum)

  • Gap between events

  • Event text:

    • Minimum line count
    • Maximum line count
    • Minimum characters per line
    • Maximum characters per line
    • Reading speed

Project managers can update the track specifications from the project management page. Within the editor the track specifications are only for reference.

Hotkeys

The Subtitle Editor has a variety of hotkeys available to allow people to work effectively. An overview of the available hotkeys can be found in the menu.

The default hotkeys can be changed to suit your preferences and keyboards. Once a hotkey has been changed, the Subtitle Editor will remember your settings for the next time you're working on an assignment.

To change your hotkeys:

  1. Click on the current hotkey
  2. Enter your preferred hotkey
  3. Click on 'Save'
  4. Cancel a hotkey change by clicking on 'Cancel"

Tip: You can also make a hotkey 'override default', which will make the hotkey behaviour work over the natural behaviour of that key. For example: If you have set a hotkey with the 'forwards' or 'backwards' arrows on your keyboard, then those keys will respond to your chosen hotkey rather than navigating you backwards and forwards in the video, which is the natural behaviour of those keys.

Sound

The following settings are available for sound:

  • Volume: You can play the video with your preferred audio volume.
  • Audio skimming: Audio skimming can be toggled off and on. When audio skimming is on, the audio of the video will play as you navigate backwards and forwards in the video.

Video

The following information and settings are available for video:

  • Duration: The lenght of the video is displayed.
  • Frame rate: The frames per second in the video are displayed.
  • Start frame: The frame which the subtitle output will start at can be edited by project managers.
